Twenty three years old Chennai-based James John Britto R has bagged the all-India top rank in the Chartered Accountants (CA) final examination conducted in November, securing 74.38 per cent. He scored 74.38 percent with 595 marks on 800.
Considered as one of the most difficult examinations, the Chartered Accountancy examination has a comparably low pass percentage.
A considerable amount of strategic planning is needed, added to some hard work and dedication so as to achieve a rank like this. Britto, who is an alumnus of the Don Bosco, Egmore actually got the 3rd rank in class X; followed by the sixth rank in the State owing to the language he chose as the second language, when in class XII. In fact, four months of article ship is left at Sharp and Tannan, and this is before he can actually have a job.
Apart from being a gold medalist when in the Loyola College, he was also ranked 4th in the ACS company Secretary), and said, “I wanted to be a CA and will be applying for membership in four months,” he says.
He used to have a winning strategy starting with planning right during the graduation years. He chose to work on his weak points and also enhance his strengths. “Science required me to draw diagrams, so I took the commerce stream. Then I decided to do CA. That settled I had to find my strengths and weaknesses and then choose faculty who could help me improve. Chennai has the best faculty and I had the guidance of seniors who told me about the faculty,” Britto revealed.
As per Britto, the students felt that the paper on direct taxes was typical. “It was a yorker, but they usually want to shake you up,” he added.
His father who has his own practice is also a chartered accountant. Britto, on the other hand, is planning to join firms located at different places for six to ten years because he needs mentoring.
The total number of aspirants, who appeared in this CA exam was 42,469; and 2,440 have cleared this exam. Nagulu Mohan Kumar of Tirupati with a score of 572 marks and Avinash Sancheti of Kolkata with 566 marks have been ranked second and third in the country.
