Civil Engineering Dept. of IIT Guwahati Conducts Study on Toxic Cocktail Emitted by Vehicles
The students’ titled their study as ‘Urban Black Carbon Emission-Its Global Impact and Local Mitigation.’
For the first time, a project has been initiated by the civil engineering students of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati to study the emission of carbon black particles by the vehicles. The study also focused on the impact of these particles on the public health and environment. The study was conducted at one of the traffic points in the city on August 24, 2016.

Carbon black particles are formed by combustion of fossil fuels, biofuels and biomass. These particles play a significant role in causing global warming. The students’ titled their study as ‘Urban Black Carbon Emission-Its Global Impact and Local Mitigation.’
The students’ selected six places in the city which as considered as heavy traffic areas. The study will be conducted at AT Road, Khanapara, Bamunimaidam, Kamakhya Gate, Athgaon and Lokhara in different seasons.

The study focuses on how the black carbon particles move towards the Himalayas with the help of wind movement. The thickness of black carbon in the atmosphere was calculated and determined how long does it stay in the air. Various instruments like Fine Particle Sampler, Aethalometer, and Sun Photometer will be used to derive the black carbon emission.
