Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has clarified that the valid interpretations used by the candidates while writing the essay during the civil services examination will be evaluated. The candidates who took the examination sent representations to the commission stating that the Hindi translation of the topic that was given for essay writing - ‘If development is not engendered, it is endangered’, was different from the topic that was given in English. Therefore, they requested the commission to consider valid interpretations.

On the other hand, giving a reply to the representations made by the candidates, the commission stated that the question papers are prepared and evaluated by experts. The Commission further added that there could be various interpretations of the term ‘engendered’ and the candidates can explain it in various ways. Therefore, valid explanations and interpretations by the candidates will be accepted.

Earlier, UPSC indicated that it would consider different explanations given by the candidates for essay writing. The examination took place on December 3, 2016. The Essay paper in the Mains examination itself carries 125 marks. One of the officials was of the opinion that people coming from diverse backgrounds have different ideas on the topic and translation mistakes make them more confused. Therefore, several explanations and interpretations by the candidates could be considered as valid.

Recently, UPSC had declared the results of Combined Defense Services (I) & (II) examination results. The candidates who qualified in the CDS (II) Examination are gearing up for the interview.
