CBSE has a good news for class 12 students and their parents. This year, CBSE has decided to reduce the difficulty level of mathematics paper making everyone heave a sigh of relief. Last year, students were left in tears after an extensively tough exam.
On Wednesday, CBSE issued a circular that explained the new and changed exam pattern according to which short-answer type questions have been introduced in the paper and number of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) questions have been reduced.
Also, the students will be given more choice with splitting up of the HOTS question paper in two different sections of four and six marks.

This decision has not only been welcomed by the students, but the teachers as well, as they said that reducing the number of HOTS will help in reducing the weightage given to difficult questions in the paper. Maths teacher of Mumbai Santacruz says that for the past two years very difficult questions were been asked in the HOTS section and restricting them to only 10% of the paper is a good thing.
Also, the short answer type questions will not only be easier, but will also save time of the students so that they can complete the paper on time.
According to the new exam pattern, 20% of the exam will be difficult and 20% will easy, the rest 60% will be average. This step by CBSE will play a huge role in improving marks and percentage secured by students.
According to the new pattern, here are some of the changes:
- 4 questions of one mark each (Total: 4 marks)
- 8 questions of two marks each (Total: 16 marks)
- 11 questions of four marks each (Total: 44 marks)
- 6 questions of 6 marks each (Total: 36 marks)
Earlier, the pattern set by CBSE was different, below is the previous pattern of mathematics exam:
- 6 questions of one mark each (Total: 6 marks)
- 13 questions of four marks each (Total: 52 marks)
- 7 questions for six marks each (Total: 42 marks)

This decision came after the gates of CBSE was flooded with complaints about the extensively tough paper. Due to this, CBSE then asked for the suggestions from schools and teachers regarding change in the paper pattern.
With this new pattern, there is a huge possibility that the average marks secured by students in Mathematics will increase in schools. Also, the overall percentage of the students will also improve, making them eligible for top notch colleges with sky high cut offs.
Also, with the decrease in number of HOTS questions and weightage associated with it along with the introduction of short answer type questions, the students will now be able to save both time and energy.
