The minister further exhorted that the existing norms of CBSE allow students to take either board exam or school based exam.

He explained that by April 2017 the amendment regarding detention policy is expected, and the states will have the freedom to have detention or no detention. As of now, no detention policy under RTE does not allow any student to be failed till Class 8.

The states will also be given a choice whether to hold board exams for Class 5 to 8. He indicated that the ministry is continuously emphasising that a student should not lose one year even though he is detained. For this purpose, supplementary exams must be conducted within two months so that the student is able to join the next batch.

He concluded that the government does not want to inculcate exam pressure on students but instead the government wants the students to take examinations in a challenging mode.
