Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2017 will take place on May 14. The online application process will commence from January 1, 2017. Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur has joined the Committee of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT Committee). Dr. A. Lakshminath, Convenor of CLAT revealed that with the addition of MNLU, the total number of seats have been increased to 2,352 for the admission year, 2017. Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna is conducting CLAT 2017 examination.

This year, the eligibility criteria is expected to change as the Bar Council of India (BCI) is looking to revive the age restriction for admission to five-year integrated law programmes. Similarly, the age bar for UG law programmes through CLAT will be fixed to 20 years. The official announcement is yet to made by BCI.

The officials of BCI had sent a notification to Vice-Chancellors and Registrars of all the universities including NLUs regarding revival of age restriction for UG law programmes. According to Legal Education Rules 2008, the upper age limit for five-year law programme is 20 years for General category and 22 years for SC/ST/OBC communities.

The law examination regulatory body has also revived the age bar for admission to L.L.B programmes. The applicants who are appearing for entrance exams like DU LLB should not be less than 30 years old if they belong to General category. However, the age limit for SC/ST/OBC candidates is 35 years.

The age limit will affect the candidates who are applying for UG law exams like CLAT 2017 & AILET 2017 drastically. The candidates who have taken a year drop and are preparing for national law exams will be affected as the age limit has been revived to 20 years. Hence, the candidates who have crossed 20 years are ineligible to apply for UG law courses. Earlier, there were no maximum age limits.
