The Supreme Court, on July 29, quashed a petition challenging the conduct of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2020 in online mode. A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara dismissed the petition considering the fact that various averments are made against the exam every year. The Consortium of NLUs (National Law Universities) had earlier declared that this year it has adopted a centre-based computerised mode in view of the current COVID-19 crisis.

Post that, another petition was submitted by several students challenging the physical presence of exam takers in the centre. The plea was for students to take CLAT 2020 in the online mode from home. Presently, the Delhi High Court is reviewing the plea and no information regarding it has been announced yet. A law graduate has submitted the plea in the Delhi High Court so that students can give the popular law entrance exam of CLAT 2020 from their own homes in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the latest notification released by the Consortium, CLAT 2020 candidates were allowed to choose from more than 200 exam centres, as opposed to only 67 centres for an offline exam. It had further added that the decision was made after assessing the viability of conducting the exam through different modes and that an online test at test centres complying with all the physical distancing and public health safety conditions was the safest option.

Justice Jayanth Nath had questioned the central government if it was possible to organise the examination by calling the exam takers to the physical exam centres amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The court is awaiting the reply from the central government and the authorities of the NLUs. It is estimated that these authorities will revert to the Delhi High Court by August 10, 2020.

Registrations for CLAT 2020 closed on July 10, 2020, and the online exam has been scheduled for August 22, 2020. Stay tuned to CollegeDekho to get more updates and news about law admissions in India.
