Commerce Overtakes Science as Most Popular Course in FYJC

The science which was once considered the most popular stream has lost its sheen. The First Year Junior College admission figures reveal that more students are opting for commerce stream. Many seats in FYJC admissions were lying vacant this year whereas all of the seats in commerce were taken. One of the main reason for this shift is because new career options are resulting in new job opportunities.

The final round of FYJC admissions took place in October which depicted that over 97,435 seats were available for students, out of which 66,692 seats were taken and the remaining 30,743 seats were lying vacant.

Around 40% of the seats in the science stream were lying vacant. More than 39,000 seats were available in the science faculty, out of which only 24,000 seats were taken while the rest were lying vacant. Whereas in commerce stream, the number of seats lying vacant was one-third of that in Science.

DyDE officials informed that over last couple of years many seats are lying vacant in the science stream. This is because new junior colleges and new divisions receive approvals due to which the total number of seats go up.

Deputy Director of Education, Pune, Meenakshi Raut said that more students are opting for commerce stream. In the last couple of years, students are opting for commerce and arts stream. This is because of the new opportunities available and alternate career options. Commerce stream has more jobs to offer. Also, most of the entrance exams have been nationalised due to which it becomes tough for students to secure seats in medical or engineering courses.
