COVID-19 Impact: M.Phil, Ph.D Viva to Take Place Through Video Conferencing
UGC has asked the universities to conduct M.Phil and Ph.D. viva exams through video conferencing to avoid academic losses. The expert panel has also given 6 months of relaxation to all the students whose maximum period for the submission of the thesis has expired.
University Grants Commission has asked universities to conduct M.Phil and Ph.D. viva exams through video conferencing to avoid academic losses. The universities across the country may conduct the Ph.D. and M.Phil Viva- Voice Examinations through video conferencing platforms such as Google, Skype, Microsoft technologies among others.
UGC had formed an expert committee under the Chairmanship of Professor RC Kuhad to come with new guidelines and academic calendars due to the Coronavirus outbreak which has nationwide lockdown. The common agenda of all the recommendations given by the expert committee is to carry forward academic formalities without compromising the quality of education and to continue the learning.
According to the reports, while conducting the Viva Voice through video conferencing, it will be open to being attended by the members of the Research Advisory Committee, faculty members of the department, research scholars, experts, apart from the Research Supervisor/ Experts/ Examiners to maintain the sanctity of the viva voice examination. Also, it is equally important for universities to maintain a proper record of the same like the signatures of Experts/ Examiners.

The expert panel has also given six months of relaxation to all the students whose maximum period for the submission of the thesis or dissertation has expired due to the outbreak of COVID-19 which has resulted in the nationwide lockdown. With this step, the students will not suffer academic losses.
