Learnings from COVID-19 to be Included in IIM and Other B-Schools Syllabus
Prominent management colleges in India, including IIMs, are getting ready to include the learnings from how leaders and businesses responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. MBA and PGDM students to learn about contextual leadership, stakeholder and stockholder welfare, among other topics.
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are gearing up to include the learnings from the COVID-19 in their educational programmes. The current programmes will be altered to include the present learnings in a bid to create leaders who can better function and succeed in a world after COVID-19.
Under these changes, topics such as contextual leadership, crisis preparedness, stockholder and stakeholder welfare will become a part of the course curriculum. Inclusivity in business leadership, the success of women in leadership positions for crisis management etc. will be some other topics included in the revised curriculum. Not only IIMs but also many other top management colleges in India are preparing to add these lessons to their courses. Some other topics such as effects on the economy, price controls, changing dynamic of HR management due to work from home, localism, sustainability, business strategies for natural disasters and epidemics, decision making under uncertainty and risk management are also being discussed for including in the academic learning.
Anju Seth, IIM Calcutta Director said that many of her colleagues at IIM Calcutta are following the recent developments and their consequences so that it can be included as a part of Business Environment, Strategy, Marketing, Economics etc. IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore are also working on the introduction of various aspects of COVID-19 pandemic in the curriculum, IIM Raipur and IIM Sambalpur are yet to take a call regarding the same.

Himanshu Rai, the Director of IIM Indore, said that inclusivity, quick response, emergency preparedness shown by some states will be part of classroom study. He added the IIMIDR faculty is working with international collaborators to compile these learnings and draw out the best practices.
A number of other prominent personalities of the education industry agree upon the fact that management education is prone to change in the coming years. Harivansh Chaturvedi, the Director of BIMTECH, said that corporate ethics and healthcare will be included as part of the B-school curriculum. On the same front, Bhimaraye Metri, the Director of IIM Trichy, added that the space for corporate success stories in India and case studies will increase after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, students who are currently enrolled in MBA and PGDM programmes, as well as students who are aspiring for MBA admissions in India, are expected to see a number of changes in the programme syllabus. The new syllabus will help students be in a better position to tackle any such crisis in the future while at the same time use these learnings in their workplace and daily lives.
