Need to Create More Medical Colleges and Graduates: President Ram Nath Kovind
- President Kovind was addressing the gathering at Centenary Celebrations of Medical Education Programme of Christian Medical College.

Addressing the gathering at the Centenary Celebrations of Medical Education Programme of Christian Medical College, President of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind stressed on the necessity to revamp medical education in the country. Similarly, the number of professionals in the healthcare sector has to be increased by creating more medical colleges. At present, there is a dearth of healthcare professionals in the country, and there is a need to create more graduates in the medical sector, he expressed.

President Kovind further pointed that there are over 1.47 million engineering seats in the country, whereas the medical seats in India are just 67,352. Only 20% medical seats were added in the last four years. Therefore, there is a need to address this gap by creating more medical colleges, he highlighted.
Honourable President of India further noted that India is going through epidemiological transitions due to the evolution of societies, development of the economy and a change in the population patterns. In the current scenario, there is a need to create more medical colleges to address multiple challenges in disease control that have to be managed simultaneously, he explained.

President Kovind pointed that there is a need to figure out solutions for the rise in lifestyle diseases or non-communicable diseases like cancers, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Also, it is necessary to develop systems to detect and cope with re-emerging infectious diseases like H1N1 Influenza, Avian Flu and HIV, he mentioned.
The President also recalled the contributions made by the Founder of CMC, Ida Sophia Scudder, who devoted her life to improving healthcare in India during the early 20th century.
