Supreme Court Rejects Legalising Same-Sex Marriage: 

As a major disappointment to the LGBTQ+ community, the Supreme Court of India has rejected to provide legal status to same-sex marriages. The five-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has left the issue for the parliament ot decide on the matter, owing that legislative amendments will be required for it. The bench stated that several complex laws will be confused in the Constitution including the Special Marriage Act

  • The apex court on Wednesday stated in its historic judgement that in the current existing laws, transgender heterosexual couples in a relationship have the right to marry.
  • The bench also announced that the Parliament can revise the laws if required as the Supreme Court does not have the authority to form new laws.
  • This judgement has given a major blow to the 19 petitioners involved in the plea. However, they have said that the fight for LGBTQ+ community rights will continue.

Israel-Hamas War: Arab Nations Have Requested UN to Intervene and Called for Immediate Ceasefire

In a major airstrike carried out by the Israel Air Force, a hospital was struck resulting in as many as 500 dead. This has enraged the Arab world which is in support of the terror group Hamas-controlled Gaza. The Arab countries have called for an intervention by the United Nations to ask Israel for an immediate Ceasefire.

  • US President Joe Biden has left for his urgent visit to war-struck ally Israel. He has also turned down the visit to Jordan for Ammas Summit after the Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas cancelled his visit for the meeting.
  • Hizbollah has also carried out some strikes against Israel by launching rockets in their territory.
  • After Hamas terrorists launched 5000 missiles in a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, this deadly war has entered into the 12th day and further intensified as more than 1.5 million Palestinian residents have been forced to leave their homes due to the strikes and nearly 5000 dead in total from both sides.

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup: Netherlands Surprises With a Win Against South Africa

In another surprising match in the current ongoing cricket world cup, the Netherlands won the match against South Africa by 38 runs. This is the second occasion in this World Cup where a strong team has been defeated by a non-test-playing team

  • Batting first, Netherlands managed to score 245/8 in a shortened match affected by rain.
  • Scott Edwards (78) from the Netherlands scored the most for the team. He was also awarded the Man of the Match for his brilliant knock.
  • The South African team was bowled out at the score of 207 even after the fighting knocks of David Miller (43) and Keshav Maharaj (40). Logan van Beek from the Netherlands took a maximum of 3 wickets
