On 18th August’ 16, a press conference was conducted in which Dr. Shaji K Joseph who is the DCI member from Kerala and Prashant Bhushan who is a senior advocate requested to revamp the Dental Council of India. This was requested as they claim that there are a lot of illegal activities going on in the council. They said if the government can revamp the MCI and UGC then they should also revamp the DCI.

A lot of former and sitting members of DCI believe that the appointment of the president is illegal and is an activity which includes corruption. The members are requesting for a structure or system which will completely ban the malpractices. They also want the government to look into the matter of how 1,187 postgraduate (MDS) seats were allotted in the academic year 2012. All the members are against the appointment Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder as a Dental Council of India president and considers it illegal.

About Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar:

Dr. Mazumder used to work as a regular professor full time in the West Bengal government health services. While working as a full-time professor he joined Vananchal Dental College which comes under the Nilamber Pitamber University of Jharkhand as an honorary visiting professor. That position helped him get the membership of DCI.

But all the members of DCI says that according to the Dentist Act it is not possible for a visiting professor to get DCI membership and be president. This makes the activity illegal and the government should revoke his membership.
