A ‘merit cum means’ scholarship has been launched by the Delhi Government to provide financial aid to dedicated students who belong to the poor and moderate earning sections of the society. The scholarship was launched on Tuesday, July 18, 2017.

Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, talked about the scholarship programme during the launch and said that the scheme will be like a fee waiver for students seeking admission in higher education institutes within the state.

The scholarship will be announced for students taking admission in either of the following universities:

  • GGS Indraprastha University (GGSIPU)
  • Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology
  • Delhi Technological University (DTU)
  • Ambedkar University (AUD)
  • Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU)
  • Indira Gandhi Delhi Technological University for Women

The minister also informed that students will have to secure at least 60% marks in the qualifying class in order to avail the scholarship. The scholarship will be available for all students applying for undergraduate courses. However, an additional 5% fee waiver will be given to SC and ST students.

Sisodia informed that the scheme has been divided into three slabs i.e. 100% fee waiver for students of BPL backgrounds, 50% fee waiver for students who have their family income up to Rs. 2.5 lakh p.a. and 25% fee waiver for students who have a family income of between Rs. 2.5 lakh and Rs.6 lakh p.a.

This is the first of its kind scholarship that has been launched for students of all slabs, including those who have their family income up to Rs. 6 lakh. The minister also added that the scholarship will provide aid for up to 20,000 to 25,000 deserving students from poor backgrounds.

The minister also informed that Rs. 10 crores have been allocated by the state government for raising the standard of education in the state. In another development, VCs of Delhi Government-Funded Universities can Sanction Works Costing Rs. 5 Crore, said CM of Delhi - Manish Sisodia.

This scheme is provided by the framework of the Delhi Higher Education Aid Trust. The scholarship will also be offered to students taking admission in the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) after the institution is named a state university.
