The Delhi High Court on 1st July said that the University has no such provision to provide mandatory hostels to all the students who take admission in DU. The HC has said this as an answer to a petition presented in the court. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar rejected the plea which said that there is a DU provision which grants mandatory hostels to all the students.

After the Delhi University council told the court that it will be a huge expense to give hostels to all the students, the court did not order to grant any interim expense as a measure. The court heard a plea that claimed 86% of the DU students are becoming a victim of exploitive property dealers and landlords under whom, they are a tenant.

Advocate Kamlesh Kumar Mishra filed the plea on behalf of the petitioners. He said that Paying Guest facilities are growing like mushrooms around the university campus and provide poor accommodation facilities in exorbitant rents.

The petition also sought equal food prices for the mess resident students and the staffs, currently, staffs pay less for the food available from the staffs’ mess.

The petitioners, who were the ex-students of the University of Delhi, were not granted any relief by the Delhi HC. The court rejected the plea by saying that authorities do not fix the food prices in mess and canteens.

The Delhi HC website is yet to feature the detailed order copy. The plea had claimed that many PGs and private accommodations/hostels were owned by professors of the university.
