Delhi University Plans to Establish Nine New Institutes If Granted IoE Status

The University of Delhi is planning to set up nine new institutes with themes and sub-themes from climate change to Indian culture and heritage if granted Institute of Eminence (IoE) status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). For this purpose, DU had submitted an academic plan to the HRD Ministry in its application seeking IoE tag. Apart from the proposed nine new institutes, Delhi University is also looking forward to seeking more academic freedom, diversify sources of finance and self-financing of courses.

So far, six institutes in India have been granted IoE status, out which three are public institutes and three are private institutes. The government is yet to select 14 higher learning institutes for IoE status.

The academic plan submitted by DU to HRD Ministry as a part of its application seeking IoE status indicates that the varsity would focus on nine thematic areas with a number of sub-themes that underscore the conception of an interdisciplinary collaborative effort of the DU community. Such an attempt will reflect DU’s resolve to respond to the future and present needs of our society as of the globe, stated the proposal.

Nine New Institutes Proposed by DU If Granted IoE Status: -

The following are the nine new institutes proposed by Delhi University if granted Institute of Eminence status: -

• School of Global History
• School of Performing Arts
• Culture and Heritage Education
• Skill Enhancement, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development
• School of Journalism
• Informatics, Communication & Computing
• School of Transnational Affairs
• School of Governance & Public Policy
• Delhi School of Climate Change & Sustainability
• Delhi School of Public Health

Among the above, DU had already set up School of Journalism, with the second batch of students enrolled this year. However, DU School of Journalism lacks infrastructure and students have been protesting over the same. The other schools proposed by DU are expected to begin on a self-financing mode if granted IoE status. As per the proposal, DU will provide financing for meritorious and needy students enrolled in new courses. For this purpose, DU will encourage governments and multi-national corporations to support meritorious or needy students.

The other academic plan submitted by DU to MHRD includes -

• Framing a faculty recruitment policy and achieving 1:10 faculty-student ratio.
• Funds worth Rs. 793 crore will be sought for teaching, development programme, skill enhancement and research.
• Setting up modern amenities
• Hostel facilities for 5,000 students
• Recreational facilities for staff and hostel students
• Expansion and upgradation of wellness and WUS health facilities
• Faculty housing

In all, Delhi University has lined up several innovative and development activities if granted IoE status. MHRD will soon take a decision on granting IoE status to DU.
