The University of Delhi is planning to limit the number of UG (Under Graduate) students opting for Modern Indian Language as an optional subject in DU colleges. The objective of the varsity is to ensure equal distribution of students in modern languages across all colleges affiliated to Delhi University.

DU colleges offer various modern languages as an optional subject at UG level such as Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, Telugu, Punjabi, Sanskrit etc. Students enrolled in B.A. and B.Com courses offered by the University of Delhi can choose any one language as an optional subject. Students opting for modern languages at UG level must study the opted language as a core course in the first two years of B.A/ B.Com course.

The Standing Committee of Delhi University’s Academic Council has recommended a 10% cap/ limit on the number of students in a college willing to study language as an optional subject against the specified intake.

The Standing Committee observed that most colleges have enrolled all students in one or two modern languages while other languages are being neglected. For instance, some colleges have enrolled all students in Punjabi, Urdu or Sanskrit languages. There is no equal distribution of students in each of these languages in DU affiliated colleges. Therefore, a limit has to be implemented on the number of students enrolling in a specific modern language.

Almost 30 colleges affiliated to Delhi University, which have separate departments of Modern Indian Languages (MILs) offer 4-10% relaxation in marks for students opting for language as one of the core subjects in B.A./ B.Com courses. The relaxation is given during the admission process so that more students will come forward to take up MILs. The Standing Committee of DU has recommended a uniform relaxation policy for all such colleges.

The idea of implementing a cap will work out only in colleges where more than one language is offered. In some colleges, there are no takers for languages like Urdu, Punjabi etc and the new rule will be beneficial to such colleges, as regular admission will be ensured in all languages equally. The final official decision regarding the same is yet to be taken.
