Around 40-50% engineering seats lie vacant in states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Gujarat for the academic session 2017-18. Now, Kerala is also one of the states where 50% of engineering states remain vacant after multiple rounds of counselling and seat allotment process. The Education Minister of Kerala is highly disappointed with the current scenario of engineering education in the state. He indicated that enough measures must be taken to revamp the courses in the professional sector. The government also constituted a committee in this regard.

All the engineering colleges in Kerala together offer 60,000 engineering seats. After multiple rounds of counselling and seat allotment process conducted by Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) Kerala, 30,000 seats have still remained vacant. The statistics reveal that the demand for engineering courses has been declining.

CEE Kerala conducted entrance examination for the admission to engineering courses, and 90,806 students appeared for the examination. CEE conducted four rounds of counselling to fill up the seats. However, 50% seats remained vacant. Now, students who wish to secure admission to engineering courses in colleges as per their wish through spot round admission process. CEE Kerala has issued directions to all the engineering colleges in India to conduct spot rounds to fill up the vacant seats. August 15, 2017, is the last date to complete the spot round admission process.

Due to the huge number of engineering colleges across the country, engineering education has been losing standards. Even though AICTE set standards for engineering education in the country, most of them are not being implemented in a proper way.
