IIT Horata Samiti which been demanding IIT in Raichur is going to intensify their demands from the coming week. The Samiti has recently planned to hold a conference of students and youths at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Raichur demanding an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for Raichur.
Addressing press, IIT Horata Samiti president, Basavaraj Kalasa, said that over 800 students and youths from across the district would participate in the event.
“MLAs, MPs and other representatives from Hyderabad Karnataka would also participate in the event. We want to send a message that we are determined to get the premier institute. We want to convey to both the Union and the State governments that the ongoing movement for IIT in Raichur is getting stronger,” he said. He also demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convene an all-party meeting and take a delegation to the Union government.
Shivaraj Patil, MLA, said halting the process of finalizing the Dharwad site for IIT was a victory for the people’s struggle. “The Union Cabinet approved sites for five of six IITs across the country and gazette notifications were also done. It is because of persistent struggles in Raichur and other parts of Hyderabad Karnataka and the resultant letter from the State government recommending Raichur for IIT, the process of finalising the site for IIT granted to Karnataka is withheld. It is a partial victory to our struggle,” he said.
Leaders Ravindra Jaldar, Virupakshi, Ashok Kumar Jain, Vinod Reddy, Ambanna Arolikar and others were present.
