Demonetisation has adversely affected the functioning of colleges across Telangana. Most of the colleges are facing hardship as students were unable to pay tuition and examination fees. On the other hand, paying salaries for the college employees too has become a challenge for private college managements.

The government of Telangana has already been delaying the fee reimbursement arrears and now the currency crisis has further affected the functioning of private educational institutions across the state. Most of the students are not in a position to pay semester fees, and the examinations are going to commence in a week. Most of the colleges are not accepting Rs. 500/- and Rs. 1000/- old notes.

One of the students expressed that he decided to clear the dues and get the hall ticket before the commencement of exam. However, due to long queues at ATMs and banks, he was unable to withdraw cash or exchange old notes. The semester exams are going to begin from November 18, 2016, and still, he has not been able to clear the dues.

Most of the college managements were of the opinion that the sudden move that was taken by the government affected the functioning of colleges. The colleges are facing a tough time as universities had already declared dates for payment of examination fee. However, most of the students did not pay the fees due to a cash crunch. Ramana Reddy, President of Joint Action Committee (JAC) stated that the college managements are not in a position to pay salaries too.

The semester examinations for degree courses are scheduled to begin from December 7, 2016, while the semester exams for engineering courses will commence from November 18, 2016.

Syed Jamsheed, a correspondent of a private engineering college, said that the government has to keep the future of students in mind while formulating or implementing a policy.

On the other hand, Telangana Intermediate Examination Board has extended the date for the payment of fees to November 21, 2016, with a late fee of Rs. 100.
