The Dental Council of India (DCI) has recommended the central government to introduce a three-year MBBS Bridge Course for BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) students so that would be eligible to take up a career as full-fledged MBBS doctors. The DCI has also urged the centre to give more significance to oral health care, as over 40 to 45% of all cancers are related to oral cavity alone. DCI further pointed that the central government allocated a huge budget for health, and there is a need to allocate separate budget to oral health too.
Professor Majumdar also indicated that central government had already agreed to the proposal of DCI to allow dental surgeons issue death certificates in a case a patient died while undergoing treatment in a dental hospital or dental clinic.

Adding further, Professor Majumdar explained that the DCI is trying to make all the possible efforts to enable dental students exposed to lectures by eminent teachers. These lectures will be made available through the web. Dental colleges need not incur the cost of accumulating resources to provide web-based lectures to students, as DCI will bear the entire costs for this purpose, he concluded.
