<p>Finally, the location for IIT Karnataka has been decided by the Central Government. Dharwad will be the place for the premier institute.
On Tuesday, human resources development minister Smriti Irani gave the go-ahead. "We received an official communication from the ministry that Dharwad has been chosen over Raichur and Mysuru," said BJP MLA Aravind Bellad to the media, who was leading a campaign for IIT in Hubballi-Dharwad.
As news of the decision spread, the twin cities erupted in joy. BJP state Chief Prahlad Joshi, in a congratulatory Facebook post, said his efforts have paid off.
Karnataka had recommended Dharwad, Raichur and Mysuru. Though Mysuru is technically more competent, a media report said, Dharwad clinched it for political and other reasons.
Dharwad district administration has identified the required 500 acres near Mummigatti on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway off Dharwad.
In March, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley, in his Budget address, announced an IIT for Karnataka that ended a 17-year wait for the state.
