Director of IIT-Guwahati Gautam Biswas on December 22, 2016 stressed on making structural engineering more attractive amongst the young generations.
Biswas was talking at the 10th structural engineering convention SEC-2016 organized by Chennai-based Structural Engineering Research Cs entre. He said that now the community has the responsibility to make it more visible, attractive and make it the destination subjects of the youngsters.

Structural Engineering has lots of exciting challenges in physical and mathematical science and very few people hardly know about it. Nowadays students opt for areas that offer higher pay package. But still, there are students who are excited by the mysteries of mathematical and physical science.
He also said that few students are aware of the fact that structural engineering has challenges and mysteries. The students should be told that there are opportunities if they want to do research in structural engineering.
Director of Central Electrochemical Research Institute Vijayamohanan K Pillai, in his speech, mentioned the challenges for structural engineers in minimising the carbon footprint. He said that in the next one decade structural engineers should play a critical role. Their role doesn't end with making highways, tunnels, and buildings. These engineers have a role in keeping the carbon footprint minimum.

Structural Engineering is an another sub-division of civil engineering. Engineers are trained to predict, understand and calculate the strength, stability, and rigidity of built structures for buildings.Structural engineers are also involved in the design of medical equipment, machinery and vehicles etc.
Structural engineers usually specialize in particular fields like building engineering, bridge engineering, pipeline engineering and industrial structure or special mechanical structures like ships, vehicles and aircrafts.
