The government is likely to finalise the rules of Disabilities Bill which was passed in the winter session by April 14, 2017. As per new rules, disabled persons may get 5 percent of reservation in higher education institutes from the next academic session. On the other, Right to Free Education will be accessible to the students from age group 6 to 18 with benchmark disabilities.

In the recent winter session, Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill was passed. As per the Bill, the reservation for disabled people in government jobs has been increased from 3 to 4 percent. Similarly, the reservation for people with disabilities in higher education has been increased from 3 to 5 percent.

Thaawar Chand Gehlot, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment revealed that the government is working consistently to implement the rules as early as possible. It is expected that the new rules will come into force on April 14, 2017. The rules of Disabilities Bill are on lines of UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities. As per newly enacted Act, the government has increased the number of disabilities to 21 from 7.

As per the newly enacted Disabilities Act intimidating, insulting, assaulting, denying food to a person with the disability as well as sexually exploiting women with the disability will lead a jail term for five years. Similarly, conducting medical procedures without consent from the women with the disability that may lead to the termination pregnancy will also lead to the jail term for five years.
