The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has alleged that colleges in Delhi have been imposing discriminatory rules for girls and charging high hostel fees. DCW has also filed various complaints to the UGC in this regard, however, no action has been taken yet.

Taking matters into her hand, DCW Chief Swati Maliwal is now determined to meet HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar in order to find solutions to these problems. She has also asked the HRD Minister to accelerate the selection process for a regular UGC Chief so that the issues can be resolved.

After receiving complaints from various complaints from student organisations and advocacy group, the commission had asked the universities and colleges in question to answer for the high hostel fee for girls and discriminatory rules.

In their reply, the institutes and colleges answered that many of them lack hostel facilities for girls as the grants that were promised have not been released by the UGC due to conflicts that are pending. This forces girls to take accommodation off the campus.

Maliwal also added that the UGC has been notified about these issues but no action has been taken yet. She also added that after talking to the officiating Chairman of UGC, V C Chauhan, she realised that he was not even aware of the issue and showed no inclination to provide a solution.

The UGC Chairman did not get any of the letters regarding the issue that were addressed directly to him, Maliwal added. She also said that he was not aware of the recent fee hike for girls’ hostel at the Hindu College that occurred due to non-receipt of funds from the UGC.

Maliwal is determined to meet Javadekar regarding these issues in order to arrive at a decision. DCW will present the issues in front of the HRD Ministry and seek their intervention.
