6 Lakh Doctors and 20 Lakh Nurses Required: Vice President Seeks PPP For Rural Healthcare
The vice president of India, Mr Venkaiah Naidu has called upon the private healthcare enterprises to work hand in hand with public sectors to increase awareness and address various issues of doctor shortage to rural healthcare.
The Vice President of India, Mr Venkaiah Naidu, while inaugurating a 4,000-bed super speciality MGM Healthcare Hospital in Chennai, invited the medical colleges, private hospitals, nursing institutions and people in medical organisations to adopt schools in their own neighbourhoods and provide counselling to the students on precautionary healthcare.
He also expressed his concerns that there is a need for 6,00,000 doctors and 20,00,000 nurses in the healthcare sector in India. The vice president hopefully invited the private sectors to come forward and address the issue. He also suggested to set up more medical colleges and government hospitals who can render affordable healthcare and diagnostic services to the people.
To improve the technical facilities in the technically advanced and primary and secondary healthcare centres in the rural areas, Mr. Naidu has proposed to implement the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for betterment and development of the healthcare facilities in rural areas.
Speaking about Non-Communicative Diseases (NCD) like Cancer, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Mr Naidu said that the modern lifestyle is complementing the growth of NCDs. He called upon the medical fraternities in the medical colleges and private hospitals to increase their reach in schools and colleges and make people aware of the dangers of modern lifestyle and encourage them to get out of the habits of physical inactivity, unhealthy foods and other dietary misconducts.

The vice president told about his findings from the 2017 World Health Organisation (WHO) report that 61% of disease-caused deaths in the country occur due to NCDs like Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disorders etc. He pointed out there is a need for awareness against the NCDs for their prevention in the early stages. He put light on the need for NCD Centres in Urban and Rural areas and expressed that private enterprises must play an important role in the initiative.

Though he expressed that the healthcare system has expanded its good reach in almost all the parts of the country, still there is a need to take care of the healthcare quality disparity seen between the services provided in urban and rural areas. The vice president urged the private institutions like MGM Healthcare to come forward and eradicate the contrast by improving the healthcare qualities.
