Doon University's Vice-Chancellor Professor V K Jain, students, faculty, administrative and non-teaching staff took the pledge to protect human rights on the occasion of international human rights day.
Addressing the gathering, professor Jain emphasised on the need to be sensitive to the rights and needs of the others around us and urged the students to be sensitive towards those who have still been deprived of basic rights even after six decades of independence.
Delivering a special lecture on "the relevance of human rights," professor Harsh Dobahl from the school of communication said that in the past century human rights regime around had consolidated and codified through various international conventions and treaties.
Professor Dobhal said that the Indian freedom struggle, Indian constitution and various provisions pertaining to law and justice was inspired and guided by international experiences elsewhere including in Europe and America. Any denial of rights and violations, therefore, should not be treated as a personal loss of others but grave problems that can foster a climate of injustice, unrest, social conflict and violence which has implications for all. Human rights are universal and inalienable.
A number of students and teachers also shared their views on human rights, growing challenges and prospects of peace in today's world.
