DP Singh Appointed as New Chairman of UGC
- Professor DP Singh is appointed as new Chairperson of UGC for the period of five years.
- Currently, Prof. DP Singh is serving as Director of NAAC Bangalore.
The long wait of UGC for the new Chairman, since 2017, has ended with the appointment of Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh as its new Chairperson. Prof. DP Singh will hold the office for five years. Currently, Prof. DP Singh is serving as Director of NAAC Bangalore. UGC requires a head for maintaining and coordinating standards of universities in the country.
Former Chairperson of UGC, Mr. Ved Prakash retired in April 2017 and since then the position has been vacant. So far, a UGC member, Professor Virendra Singh Chauhan has been holding the office as officiating Chairperson.

In the first week of December 2017, Ministry of Human Resource Development clarified that it had initiated the process of appointing the Vice Chairman to UGC. The post has been vacant since March 2017. A fresh advertisement was issued inviting applications from the eligible candidates for the post of Vice Chairman. Earlier, HRD Ministry gave the responsibility of shortlisting the names for the post of Vice Chairman to a selection committee, headed by Mr. KK Sharma. However, the ministry scrapped the committee, as there was no development in the last six months.

According to norms, UGC must appoint the Chairperson to UGC within six months after the end of former Chairperson’s tenure. In the absence of Chairperson, Vice Chairman must hold the office as Chairperson. In case of UGC, both the posts remained vacant, because of which Professor Virendra Singh Chauhan was appointed as officiating head.
