Recently, the Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE decided not to ‘standardize’ or ‘moderate’ – CBSE’s terms for inflating marks. Therefore, the average marks in Class 12 results are likely to decrease by 10% this year. CBSE took the decision at a meeting of school boards on April 24, 2017. The board clarified that it will not increase marks through moderation. Now, the decision of CBSE will witness a drop in marks and marginal dip in pass percentage.

One of the officials of CBSE explained that the drop in average marks differs for different subjects. Both aggregate and subject-wise marks will witness a drop. The average drop might be from 6% to 10% based on the marks scored by the candidates in each subject.

The lower aggregate marks might influence the cut-offs for admission to UG courses in various universities. Delhi University conducts UG admissions based on the marks secured by the applicants in Class 12. Therefore, the suspension of awarding moderation marks will influence the cut-offs of Delhi University.

Delhi University has officially announced that the registration process for UG courses will begin from May 22, 2017. Every year, lakhs of students apply for UG courses at Delhi University. The varsity may release at least seven to eight cut-off lists depending upon the number of seats vacant after each.
