Law aspirants of the general category will face a tough competition for admission to the Delhi University’s (DU) Faculty of Law as the seats for the general category students have been slashed.

In 2017, the total number of seats in the law programmes, including the supernumerary categories, is 2,310. Supernumerary categories comprise students with physical disabilities, foreign nationals and children of war widows.

The notification regarding this change was issued by DU on July 7, 2017, stating that there will be only 1,033 seats for the candidates of general category from the session 2017-18 as compared to 1,167 seats in 2016. For detailed seat distribution, check the table below.

The notification regarding the same was released after much deliberation between the Delhi University Law Faculty and Bar Council of India (BCI). According to sources, the final decision was made to admit 2,310 students for the session 2017-18 as opposed to BCI’s order of taking only 1,440 students.

The BCI argued that no more than 1,440 students can be admitted to DU’s Faculty of Law according to the Legal Education Rules, 2008. The case was then taken to the Delhi High Court that granted the university permission to admit 2,310 students for the LLB programme.
