DU: Miranda House Sets Up Centre for Northeast Studies

A centre for Northeast studies has been set up by Miranda House of Delhi University. The main objective of the same is to focus on education outreach and scientific research on different aspects of sustainable development and biodiversity. The inauguration of Centre for Northeast Studies took place on February 27, 2017, where the Governor of Manipur, Najma Heptullah inaugurated the centre and addressed the gathering.

He stressed that the Centre will provide key support to enhance the scope for a better research-based understanding of the opportunities, challenges and ethos in the Northeastern states in a culturally sensitive manner.

The Centre for Northeast Studies has been established in collaboration with Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development or IBSD. One of the officials of Miranda House revealed that the main aim of the centre is to carry out research projects with special importance and attention to knowledge production. Multimedia documentation and publications will play a significant role in influencing the policies and development of Northeast.

In September 2016, North East Students of Delhi University launched a special manifesto after holding wide consultations with the University. The main objective of the manifesto was to safeguard the judicial rights of Northeast students pursuing various courses in the prestigious Delhi University.

The manifesto also enabled Northeast students to transform their hostels into cultural centres where awareness could be created on Northeast cultures. Additionally, they believe that Hindi must not be made a compulsory subject and these students should have the option to choose an alternative subject.
