Delhi University’s revised admission rule for OBC (Other Backward Class) students is raising concerns for colleges lately. The varsity confirmed that students seeking admission under OBC-NCL category must submit the certificate of the same issued only after March 31, 2018.

Until 2017, students submitted OBC-NCL certificates that were issued up to a year ago. Colleges affiliated to Delhi University objected the new norm of DU. They pointed out that the revised norm will damage the reputation of the varsity and create chaos in the admission process.

Member of DU Admission Committee, Mr. Akhilesh Kumar pointed out that the OBC-NCL certificate must be based on income tax returns of the previous fiscal year. Even though the varsity allowed students to submit income certificate for the last fiscal year during the application process, the applicants must submit a fresh certificate/ recently issued one to endorse the older certificate. On the other hand, this additional certificate must have the reference of candidate’s original caste certificate, he confirmed.

A top official of a reputed DU college stated that the new admission rule for OBC candidates would result in chaos. It is very difficult for the students to visit the concerned government department and obtain the latest certificate. The endorsement is not possible practically and it would be better if the varsity retains the regulations.

The major problem is for those students who obtained the OBC-NCL certificates in January/ February, as the government department will not issue a new certificate to them for the next six months.

The University of Delhi reserves 27% seats for the applicants under OBC-NCL category. The colleges will have to ensure that the caste of the students is included in the OBC central list and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
