The University of Delhi recently came up with the decision to change the eligibility criteria to study B.Com and B.A. in Economics from the upcoming academic session of 2019-20. The University makes Mathematics mandatory for admissions in the above-mentioned courses. Under the new rules introduced by the University, ‘Mathematics’ will be considered as a mandatory subject under ‘Best of Four’ for admission in bachelor of arts (B.A.) economics course along with Economics and one Language course.

In previous sessions, the only eligibility criteria for B.A. Economics was that students who had Mathematics in 12th could opt for the course in DU. The similar changes have been made in B.Com eligibility criteria also. The university informed that the candidate must pass in Mathematics with at least 50% marks in 12th level for getting B.Com in Delhi University where previously, just a pass in Mathematics was the minimum eligibility criteria.

Many students and their parents express grievance on the sudden change in the eligibility criteria. They expressed that this will lower the chances of admission of a student by bringing his/her percentage down to a large extent.

A retired army officer, who on behalf of her husband’s colleague came with their child for admission as their family posted at Tezpur couldn’t visit Delhi for admissions said that their child’s best of four percentage is 95% and she has 100% marks scored in Political Science. She took up mathematics as the sixth elective subject and passed but if now she has to count Mathematics in best of four the percentile will go down drastically and she won’t be able to take admission in the University. She took up mathematics just to match the eligibility criterion mentioned from the university before.
