Due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown in the nation, Delhi University (DU) has postponed the May-June semester exams. A notice regarding this has also been published on DU’s official website (du.ac.in). In addition to the DU regular colleges, the exams for the School of Open Learning (SOL) and NCWEB have also been postponed. A fresh date sheet for all the university exams has been released and now the exams for the final term/semester/year for all the UG and PG students will take place from July 1, 2020, onwards. An official notification regarding the same is there on the official website of DU (du.ac.in). As per the notification, the exams will be conducted for all the students including students who are registered with the School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women Education Board (NCWEB).

The University also mentioned that all the exams will take place in three sessions in a day including Sundays, and will have a duration of 2 hours. A detailed date sheet of the exams will be released soon along with separate guidelines for exams for the first and second-year students of both UG and PG courses. In case, the COVID-19 situation gets worse, DU will look at other ways of conducting exams such as Open Book Examinations (OBE), for the final semester/term/year UG and PG students in order to ensure social distancing.

DU has come up with an online portal to help the students register for the DU May-June 2020 semester exam. It has also stated that the students who already submitted their forms in the colleges also need to fill or update the exam form. Those who have paid the exam fee already are exempt from the fee payment and those who haven't paid the fee will need to make the payment online on the college portal or physically at the college once the lockdown is lifted. The forms will be verified by the respective colleges/departments. Also, DU has extended the last date for filling up the exam form until May 31, 2020. Earlier, the last date was May 15, 2020.

Dean Opposes Online Exams for DU: Practically Impossible

The proposal by Delhi University officials to conduct exams in online mode has been opposed by deans of various departments stating that it is practically impossible. The online process of paper setting, submission of answers and evaluation has very high chances of tampering according to the Deans.

Some of them opposed the idea as many students of Delhi University reside in areas with connectivity issues and many students are good at writing but not fluent in speaking which is not the right step as it will not be able to test the student properly. Also, the professors would have to prepare too many question papers to say if one department has 2,000 students, professors will have to prepare 16,000 different questions.

Delhi University is shut till April 14 due to the lockdown. All colleges affiliated to DU had started the internal assessment process but it was paused in between due to the closure of the colleges. However, many colleges have moved to online mode and are updating students about their assignment status online. Students can check DU official website for all the latest updates, there is a possibility that the exam may be rescheduled at short notice. As of now, the decision has been taken only to defer the exam. The university may think of conducting the exams as late as July and limiting the break once the situation gets a little better.

Meanwhile, Delhi University is also planning to make the entire admission process online to minimise the students’ visits to the university due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The DU colleges have been requested to declare the seats in each course, category-wise on their websites so that the admission team can start working on the same.

Coronavirus has impacted the education system and various exams at the school, state, national and the university level have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. Many institutes such as IIT Delhi, JNU, have stopped their offline operations and have moved their teaching process online.
