DU to Directly Reach Out to Transgender Students for Admissions

Delhi University’s Transgender Resource Centre (TRC) which was established in the year 2018 is planning to directly reach out to the transgender community way before the admission process for the upcoming academic session starts. The centre will counsel and provide assistance to the Transgender students about the university's admission process from Monday.

The DU online registration process 2019 for admission to undergraduate programmes started last week and the students can apply latest by 14th June 2019.

The Transgender Resource Centre at DU was set up in North Campus last April to guide transgender candidates and provide them with assistance in the admission process. However, no transgender student has enrolled in any regular course since the University of Delhi introduces the third gender category from the 2015 academic year.

An Associate Prof. at the Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension Rajesh, informed that idea of inviting transgender students to the RTC did not work in the past and was not helpful as not many transgender students turned up. This year the centre is trying a new approach and will reach out to them directly in their neighbourhoods. The RTC has started working on the same and is identifying their addresses so that they could organise camps. He further informed that they will provide them will all the information related to admissions and persuade them to opt for regular classes and how it is helpful for them in the long run.

The varsity receives applications from transgender students every year, but nobody has enrolled for the regular courses as of now. The university received 101 applications under the transgender category last year. It was also witnessed that transgender students prefer SOL as it offers distance courses.

Manpreet, Founder of Pehal NGO said that it is always better to directly reach out to the transgender community rather than centres. There are many transgender candidates who want to study but do not get the right medium. Therefore, reaching out to them directly is a way better option. She further said that the major hurdle is the DU's name change policy which is one of the reasons that not many transgender students enrol in regular courses.

According to Delhi University's norms, a student can only change their respective names in records after they have changed them in school records.
