DU Says No to Additional Seats in 2016

Delhi University will not be having any additional seats for the academic session 2016. The decision came after the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked the university to start the humanities and science courses – introduced by some of the colleges - on a self-financing mode. As a result Delhi University has put these courses on hold.

The colleges that come under the Government of Delhi have also put the process on hold.

Although a few colleges were introducing the course, some colleges of Delhi University have been offering the humanities and science courses for some time now.

63 colleges are affiliated with the Delhi University that offer 54,000 seats. With the process put on hold, the University has said no to 2,000 more seats that would have been added. However, the courses were approved by the admission committee, they could not announced in the midst of the admission process.

Self-financing courses would require students to pay much more than the fees paid for similar undergraduate level courses in DU.

A Senior University Official said, “The University could not allow self-financing courses to be started in DU colleges. So the introduction of the courses was put on hold.”

There were various courses that were approved in more than 20 colleges. Following are few of the courses that were approved in the respective colleges:

GK Arora, Principal, Bhim Rao Ambedkar College said, “We are hoping these issues would be resolved and we would be able to start it from this year. We have already written to Delhi government with certain queries.”
