DU's Daulat Ram College: Seats full in BA Course; Students asked to Pick Other Subjects

After a rush of students at the Daulat Ram College on June 28, last day for admission basis the first cut-off, the BA Political Science and History programme was closed by the colleges after it had to accept more students than the sanctioned intake of 18.
According to the DU regulations, if an applicant has met the required cut-off, he or she has to be offered a seat at the college regardless of the number of seats available. However, there were many students who had cleared the cut-off but were asked to choose other BA specialisations apart from Political Science and History.
Amrit Mehta’s daughter secured 91.8% marks in Class 12 board examinations and was facilitated by the Himachal Pradesh CM for her performance. Even after clearing the cut-off for Daulat Ram College’s BA programme (91%), she was denied a seat in the course like many others.
After the news of admissions being denied broke out, members of the ABVP and DUSU arrived at the college and created chaos on the campus. The even got into an argument with the Principal, Savita Roy. Eventually, the police was called to get the situation under control.

A team was sent by DU to look into the matter following which Mehta’s daughter and other students like her got admission in the college. The college has not yet clarified whether all eligible applicants have been granted admission or not.
Officials of the DU admission committee have stated that the rule as per which all eligible students are granted admission applies to all courses uniformly. M K Pandit, Chairman of Admission Committee, said that they have asked the college to respond on the matter.

There are a total of 169 seats in the BA programme including the seats across all 9 subject combinations. There are 18 seats for every subject combination. Since seats in Political Science and History have been filled, the college has been asking the students to opt for other combinations.
