DU's Miranda House Makes its Campus Disabled-Friendly

Delhi University’s Miranda House is taking little yet significant steps for setting an example of a college that is using digital technology to make the campus disabled-friendly. The college is trying to enable the disabled and sensitize others with respect to the same.

A phone application has been launched by Lakshita, the enabling committee of the college, that helps the blind navigate the premises. 100 QR codes have been installed across the entire college. When anyone having the app on their smartphone comes within three feet of any of these codes, they receive the directions.

One visually impaired student explained that while passing by the canteen, the phone tells how many steps to be taken in which direction. Some students feel conscious asking for directions from others every now and then. This app is easy and prompt to use and thus gives them confidence. The app also has simplified navigation and the voice messages are also clear.

According to the Principal of the college, technology is something that is understood by every student and at the same time is easy to use. The QR codes make the students wonder what they are and what do they do and hence create awareness and sensitise the students.

Using the app makes the students self-reliant. Additionally, the college has installed Braille notice board, released Braille editions of the college magazine and converted recommended textbooks into Braille.

Miranda House has several ramps which aid the movement of the disabled and further plans are underway to install elevators.
