<p>Student of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and its affiliated colleges are coming with an unique idea- students from Vidarbha, Marathwada and Solapur regions, who are facing a drought-like situation, will provide earn and learn opportunities.
The University is in talks with some industry partners to provide small jobs to such needy students so that they can support their families back home without hampering their studies.
We are creating a database of these students, who are in thousands. The state government is likely to announce the drought-affected regions soon. A number of students from Marathwada and adjoining areas come to study at the university each year. I am sure we will be able to help them,” said the VC of the University.
The University already has a earn and learn scheme for which it spends annually about Rs 5 crore while this time the focus is on students from drought-affected regions.
A student is expected to work for three hours every day. Students working under this scheme are paid an honorarium of Rs 25 per hour. Payment is made as per the attendance sheet maintained by the institute or college.
“Jobs like mowing lawns, arranging files, labeling and covering books and watering plants are offered to these students. The university is preparing a list of students from scarcity-hit areas and identifying those who are in desperate need of a job. I have also been speaking to some industry partners who can pick these students and offer them small administrative jobs as part of their corporate social responsibility activities,” the VC added further.
Significantly the University was approached by some private companies last year showing the willingness to offer small jobs to the needy students.
