AICTE to Revamp Engineering Laboratories in Colleges of Rural Areas
Engineering Laboratories in the Technical Colleges of rural areas to have a new makeover with the 20 Lakh Rupees Grant being offered by AICTE under MHRD’s MODROB Scheme for upgrading old equipment with the new ones.
The laboratories of Rural Technical Institutions and Engineering Colleges are about to get a makeover as informed by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). It will grant funds under the MODROBS (Modernisation and Removal of Obsolescence Scheme) to the institutes for updating the laboratories with all the modern equipment required as directed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
The Institutes will have to apply for getting the funds up to 20 lakhs under the MODROBS Scheme for the Technical and Engineering Colleges. The institute will have to be at least 20 years old and functioning for being considered eligible under the scheme for lab-makeover. The institutes will be directed to modernise their labs within two years of deadline after acquiring the funds. Only Government and Government-Aided Institutes for engineering and technical studies will get the fund.
Private universities who want to utilise the fund under the MODROB Scheme will be granted the amount as a percentage of the sanctioned amount as an advance. After the institute has produced the utilisation certificate and other specified documents, rest 20% of the fund will be granted to the institute. The guidelines for the private universities are notified under the terms and conditions laid for MODROBS. The last date for applying in the scheme is 28th August 2019.
While talking about the aim and utilisation of MODROBS Scheme, an AICTE official has informed that a special drive has been undertaken by AICTE under the MODROB Scheme for refurbishing laboratories in technical institutions running in rural areas which are approved by AICTE by providing fund grants for procuring modern equipment.
MODROBS aims to modernise and eradicate obsolescence in the laboratories, workshops and computing facilities excluding libraries to enhance the functional response of technical institutions for training, teaching and research purpose. The funds will also be used for new innovations in the classroom, laboratory, teaching technologies, development of lab instructional element and relevant technology to assure that practical and project work to be conducted by students is up-to-date and suited to the current needs of the industry.

An official of AICTE informed that the equipment installed under the scheme of AICTE will have versatile outcomes. The finances equipment under the MODROB Scheme can be ideally used for upgradation of facilities in existing laboratories, enrichment of performance parameter in respect to the existing equipment, incorporation of the latest development in the field and replacement of outdated depreciated equipment with modern ones.

The equipment installed under MODROBS can also be utilised for the indirect benefit to faculty as well as students through continuing academic and training programmes for local industry and consultancy related works.
