The move is a part of the efforts of AICTE to handle the issue of the vacant seats in several engineering colleges of the state. There are a number of engineering colleges in the state that have failed to fulfill even the 30 percent of seats for many consecutive years. The prime reason behind this could be that they lack some of the basic facilities, to begin with.
The new norms were published in the handbook of guidelines which state that the courses of the institutions will no longer be continued (with the approval of the council) if it fails to achieve 30% admissions for 5 consecutive years.
The move has got mixed reaction from different quarters of the industry. They argue that colleges are being given approval after losing the marks by few points.
Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director of DTE said that not all colleges that have vacant seats will be taken into the purview of the new guideline. Some of the colleges that are on the borderline of achieving the desired target cannot be included under these regulations.
