At least 50,000 engineering seats in Maharashtra are expected to go vacant for the academic session 2018-19. Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra has completed the last round of counselling for engineering courses. As per the data of DTE, a total number of 79,599 students were allocated admission in engineering courses out of 1.30 lakh seats available across the state. Even though 79,599 students were allocated seats, some of the students might not confirm admission, DTE stated.

Compared to the 2017, the number of B. Tech engineering admissions in Maharashtra has declined. In 2017, at least 81,700 candidates confirmed their admission by the end of the last round. In 2018, however, over 79,000 candidates may confirm admission.

41% of engineering seats remained vacant in various engineering colleges in Maharashtra in 2017. Due to the declining demand for engineering courses in Maharashtra, DTE had reduced the intake for the academic session 2018-19. With the current scenario, at least 40% seats might go vacant in Maharashtra.

Even though DTE introduced a slew of measures to reduce the vacant seats in engineering courses, the initiates miserably failed to address the issue. For the fifth consecutive year, DTE Maharashtra witnessed a huge number of vacant seats despite non-approval for new engineering courses and reduction of seats by 8,000.
