Engineers, MBAs in Tamil Nadu Competing for 14 Sanitary Worker Jobs
MBAs and engineers are also among the ones competing for the 14 posts of sanitary workers in Tamil Nadu. It is surprising to see that graduates of professional courses competing for government jobs which are below par to their qualification.
About 4,000 people have applied for the 14 posts available for sanitary workers at the state assembly secretariat in Chennai. The most surprising and shocking thing about it is that a large number of the applicants are MBAs and engineering graduates apart from degree holders in Arts, commerce and science streams.
Admit cards to appear for interviews have been sent to 3930 candidates. Out of the 14 posts, 4 are for sanitary workers and 10 are for sweepers. The salary for both has been fixed between approximately Rs.15,700- Rs.50,0000.
The candidates are from different communities and from all over the state. According to the recruitment roster, 4 posts are set aside for general category, 3 for most backward classes and de-notified tribes, 4 for OBCs (excluding Muslims), 2 for SCs and 1 for ST. No educational qualification has been mentioned but physical fitness has been made compulsory.
Many applicants do not have formal education and competing with them are people who have completed BE, M.Com, M.Tech, and MBA apart from graduates in other fields. Candidates registered with the employment exchange are also included in the list.

This is almost similar to 93,000 applicants, which includes Ph.D. holders who are aiming for the 62 peon posts in UP, and 7000 applicants vying for 13 vacancies for the post of waiters at the Mantralaya canteen in Mumbai. Also, a majority of the applicants are more qualified than the required qualification of being 4th pass or 5th pass.

The advertisement for the 14 vacant posts was issued in August 2018, but it caught candidates' attention when the list of candidates with their details, including admit card details was posted in the Tamil Nadu government website. As per analysts, this indicates the job crisis in Tamil Nadu and also at the same time, highlights the lack of employment opportunities for those who are educated.
