Giving a written reply in a Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Human Resource and Development Prakash Javadekar revealed that enrollment of girls in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is just 8%. On the other hand, the enrollment of girls in AICTE approved technical institutes was 42.21% during the academic session 2014-15 and 46.60% during the academic session 2015-16.

He further indicated that a three-member committee is in the process of working on a report in order to suggest measures for improving the number of girl student ratio in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Mahendra Nath Pandey, HRD (State) Minister explained that during the three-year period, i.e., 2013-14 & 2015-16, a total number of 69,862 Ph.Ds were awarded. The data has been given by All India Survey for Higher Education or AISHE. He further explained that the number of students enrolled in higher education is measured by taking the eligible population in the age group of 18-23 years into consideration.

Therefore, defining the percentage of total enrolment in higher education with the eligible people in the age group of 18-23 is also called as Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER). The GER in the year 2015-16 was 24.5 percent. However, it was only 10 percent in the year 2004-05.

The statistics reveal that emphasis on higher education has increased over a projected period of ten years and the government will work consistently to improve the GER. Mr. Pandey explained that there is a need to improve enrollment in girls education and HRD Ministry is working on it.
