Enrolment in Higher Education Witnesses an Increase of 24.5%: MHRD Reports
As per the latest report of the MHRD, during the year 2015-16, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for Higher Education in the country has increased to 24.5 percent.
As per the latest report of MHRD or Ministry of Human Resource Development, during the year 2015-16, the Gross Enrolment Ratio or GER for Higher Education in the country has increased to 24.5 percent. This is certainly a considerable amount of growth for the higher education sector of the country.
There has been almost a 14 percent increase as compared to the previous decade. During the period of 2004-05, the GER for the higher education sector in the country was mere 10 percent.
Gross Enrolment Ratio is calculated basis the total enrolment of students in higher education as a percentage of the total population of the country in the age group of 18 to 23 years.
In its press release, the ministry stated that the quantum jump in the GER shows that there is a tremendous improvement in the registration of students in all the higher education institutes in India.
In order to improve the quality of higher education in India, the ministry has taken several steps over the years. These include:
- Setting up of several higher education institutes
- Scholarships are being offered to the students under various government-backed schemes
- Subsidies on the loan amount are specifically offered to students.
- Classrooms are developed digitally with the help of different information and communication technology (ICT) applications.

The government at the Centre has launched various initiatives to uplift the quality of education in higher education institutes. The HRD ministry had launched National Institute Ranking Framework or NIRF in 2015. NIRF announced its first ranking list in the year 2016 and is now set to release the ranking list for 2017 in the month of April this year. Moreover, under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme, the government seeks to promote access to higher education to students across states.
