Ericsson & IIT Delhi to Jointly Develop 5G Technology in India
Ericsson, the popular telecom company has entered into a collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi) by signing an agreement to work on a programme to develop 5G technology in India.
Ericsson, the popular telecom company has entered into a collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi) by signing an agreement to work on a programme to develop 5G technology in India.

The official statement was released by Ericsson which stated the rolling out of 5th Generation (5G) technology in the country. In view of this, the telecom giant set up a Centre of Excellence with a 5G test bed. On the other hand, IIT-Delhi's incubation centre will make use of this facility to further the development of India's 5G ecosystem.

Features of the collaboration:
- It is estimated that the final test series of this programme will begin in the second half of this year (July 2017) which will eventually place our country at par with the other developed countries of the world with respect to 5G network and application deployment.
- The limited deployment, as well as 5G trials, will be started globally by mid-2018.
- Commercial availability is likely to begin in 2020.
- The programme will also give a push to the 'Digital India' initiatives of the government.
- Application development for Indian industries and start-ups will also be fast-tracked.
- IIT Delhi will host the Centre of Excellence that is will be developed under the agreement.
- IIT Delhi will also conduct its own research to find out how the challenges of various countries can be dealt with by the use of mobile technologies.
- With 5G technology coming up, development of smart cities will also become easy.
- The primary focus of the programme will be to deliver innovation and research, as well as industrial pilots that will use 5G networks as an enabler.
