Event Update: National Tech Day at NBRI

The CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute celebrated the National Technology Day on11th May. The day was observed as ‘Open Day’ and a large numbers of students drawn from local schools and colleges visited different laboratories, namely, Exposition, Herbarium, Library, Botanical Garden and also the R&D laboratories.

Every year the ‘National Technology Day’ is celebrated across the country on May 11. This day is being commemorated to celebrate the anniversary of the first of the five tests of Operation Shakti (Pokhran-II) nuclear test which was carried out on May 11, 1998, in Pokhran, Rajasthan. Apart from the Pokhran nuclear test, on this day the first indigenous aircraft, Hansa-3, was test flown at Bangalore and India also conducted the successful test-firing of the Trishul missile.

This day glorifies the importance of science in our day-to-day life and motivates the students to adopt it as a career option. On the occasion, Prof Ashish Datta, a distinguished scientist and a former director, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi, was the chief guest and delivered the National Technology Day lecture on ‘Dream to bring Science to society.’

In his lecture, Prof Datta discussed the creative and innovative ideas for new technologies. He added that there could be no economic advancement without the creation of knowledge. He said that science was a journey and not a destination and the road to success was always under construction.

Prof Datta appreciated the efforts made in transgenic crops’ technologies for the food security of the world. While discussing the food security, Prof Datta said that for combating the threat of world poverty and hunger, there was a need for assessing the genetically-modified crops.

Earlier, director, CSIR-NBRI, CS Nautiyal welcomed the gathering and introduced Prof Datta. In the end, chief scientist DK Upreti proposed the vote of thanks.
