With the mandate regarding 10% reservation for EWS or the Economically Weaker Section in general category, the overall seats on offer have gone up by 25%. The new 10% addition will lead to an increase of around 16,000 seats in the prestigious Delhi University as well.

In one of the latest move by Delhi University, EWS students can get provisional admission by using acknowledgement receipt from the authority, in case there is a delay in procuring the category certificate.

On the other hand, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) and Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) which are both residential institutes with limited hostel accommodation, will also witness a rise in student intake. The student intake of IIT Delhi has gone up by 590 whereas in JNU it has gone up by 346.

As per the sources, around 20,000 seats will be available for the candidates in the city including those seeking admission in Delhi University and other popular institutions of technology.

Meanwhile, many higher educational institutes and universities like DU are worried about their academic set up. The financial ramifications of the varsity are enormous and the additional seats will lead to extra cost. It will be difficult for the varsity to manage the extra cost that too without any assistance from the central government.

With the addition of seats, the admission process will also become hectic and the duration of the entire admission process might be extended as well.

Similarly, residential universities are also under no less pressure as they will have to come up with more hostels and infrastructure to accommodate the students. Universities such as JNU and NLU will have to search for new options to provide the students with hostel facilities.

Sheetu Ahuja, Manager (Academics) at IIT said that engineering colleges in Delhi will benefit from the EWS quota. There will be a boost in revenues with the implementation of 10% EWS Quota in colleges like IIIT Delhi.
