As per 10% reservation for EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) in general category, 25% additional seats shall be created in engineering colleges across the Gujarat state. AICTE Chairperson, Mr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe confirmed that there would be a 25% rise in the number of engineering seats in private and government engineering colleges in Gujarat. However, the rise in the number of engineering seats will lead to more number of vacant seats in engineering colleges across the state, he pointed out.

Every year, almost 50% of B.Tech seats in engineering colleges remain vacant. With the creation of 25% additional seats for 10% EWS quota, the percentage of vacant seats in engineering colleges may increase from 50% to 52%.

In 2017-18, almost 31,682 (57%) out of 58,000 engineering seats remained vacant in self-financing colleges. Similarly, 51% of engineering seats left unfilled in 2016-17. As far as government engineering institutes are concerned, the number of vacant seats is not substantial.

Mr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe indicated that the number of Science stream students from Class 12 was less than the number of engineering seats available. If more students choose Science stream in Class 12 and engineering in UG, the vacant seats will be filled, he added.
