Executive Council of JNU Approves UGC Notification on Entrance Exams Amid Students and Teachers Protest
One of the officials of JNU revealed that the Executive Council has approved all the items on agenda which were earlier approved by Academic Council.
The Executive Council (EC) of Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU approved the notification of University Grants Commission regarding holding entrance examinations to M.Phil and Ph. D courses. However, teachers and students did not agree with the decision of EC and protested against the move. On December 26, 2016, Academic Council of JNU approved the UGC notification amid students and teachers protest and the administration of varsity suspended nine students.

One of the officials of JNU revealed that the Executive Council has approved all the items on agenda which were earlier approved by Academic Council. The students union of JNU issued a notice to Mohit Pandey, President of Executive Council to withdraw the UGC notification. They warned him that they would carry out the protest if the council does not support the students.

As per UGC notification, entrance exam to M. Phil & Ph. D courses is just a qualifying exam.The candidates must score a minimum of 50% qualifying marks to qualify the entrance examination. A separate merit list will be prepared as per candidate's performance in interview or VIVA-Voice.
The teachers who were protesting at the venue of Executive Council meet demanded that the proceedings of Academic Council which were held during December 23 & 26, 2016 must be re-convened. They claimed that the varsity did not follow the rules and regulations while passing notification.
One of the officials of JNU clarified that the administration of JNU is planning to form a committee to look into the objections which were raised by teachers and students.
